Planning Underway for the 56th KofC Bob Stras Dallas Classic

Where were you in ‘62? Gasoline was 28 cents a gallon, John Glenn was the first American to orbit the earth in February of that year, the Cuban Missile Crisis occurred in October and The Dallas Diocese Chapter began sponsoring a high school basketball tournament. By 2018, 56 years later, this Tournament has grown into one of the most prestigious and long-standing basketball tournaments in the Dallas Metroplex for high school boys and girls. In addition to the great competition that occurs every year, the Knights of Columbus Bob Stras Dallas Classic gives the DDC a tremendous opportunity to let the youth of Dallas learn about the principles of our order and likewise gives us an opportunity to support several of our local Catholic high schools.

The 2018 edition of the Tournament will take place between Thursday November 29th and Saturday December 1st and is shaping up very nicely. Once again, 8 boys teams will compete at Dallas Jesuit and 8 girls teams will compete at Bishop Lynch High School. In the boys bracket, Nolan Catholic rejoins the tournament, St. Ignatius Jesuit returns from San Francisco and Dallas Lincoln joins a group of top local talent. In the girls bracket, Bishop Dunne has returned to the Tournament for the first time in several years as well as Ursuline and St. Teresa’s Academy of Kansas City. As always the competition and excitement should be great at both host schools and as an added plus, both host schools are expanding the use of “live streaming” for those fans that can’t make it to the games in person.

Bob Stras Dallas Classic Basketball Tournament

The Dallas Diocese Chapter through the generosity of its Councils, Assemblies, Affiliated Organizations, Individual Knights and Sponsors provides much of the funding and support to the two host schools and to defray the cost of putting on the Tournament. Our organization publishes the Tournament program, provides the individual awards and team trophies, provides player and coaches commemorative items, produces banners and advertising for the event, awards a stipend to both hosts to cover part of the cost of referee’s, security and more as well as many other forms of support including volunteers. The Color Corp is also present at both championship games to present the colors and remind all present that this is a Knights of Columbus sponsored event.

In order to make the 2018 Dallas Classic a success we once again need your help! In 2017 about 75% of the advertising dollars generated came from Council or Assembly ads, affiliated organization ads (Regan Insurance Agency, Hike for Life, the DDC itself, etc.) and individual Knights taking Platinum or Gold sponsorships or other ads. None of what the DDC does for this Tournament would be possible without that support.

So, for all of you who have supported the Tournament for so many years, we thank you!! However, only about 22% of our Councils and Assemblies are currently supporting the Tournament through advertising in the event program. It would be great if we could expand participation to other Councils and Assemblies to close the gap between the total cost of putting on the event and the current level of support that we provide!
